According to Wikipedia, passion is “a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion, a compelling enthusiasm or desire for something.”
Right now I’m on my own personal journey to find my passion.
A convo with my cousin is really what sparked this. She said that passion isn’t necessarily something you were born great at, it’s something that you are willing to work at until you are great. That blew my mind. There were many things I started and stopped because I wasn’t good at them or willing to put the time and work to get there. Why was it that I could never follow through? According to her, it’s because I hadn’t found the thing that would compel me to stay consistent. What is that for me? I realized that finding that answer would bring me to my destination:a passion.
If you happen to be in a similar predicament, or want to do some soul-searching, join me!
Here are few exercises I’m using to uncover my passion(s):
#1: Create a list of things you like
These are the things that you enjoy doing whether it’s reading, drawing, maybe even just hanging out with friends or arguing. Make a note of literally everything.
#2: Examine what you like- Why do you like them?
For me, I like meeting people , making playlists for long car rides, and writing, just to name a few. After thinking about why I liked these things, I realized it’s because I like creating and sharing experiences with others.
After examining everything you enjoy, you’ll realize that there may be something at the core that connects all of these things together.
Anything you ever had an idea about trying but never got to? TRY IT! Sign up for a class and go do it! I found a resource here to get you started. If you find something you like, keep at it! Next thing you know, you’ll have a passion project! For me, it’s this blog. I’m making a conscious decision to be consistent because I think this can lead me to my passions.
#4: Can you think of ways to make a living or lifestyle with the things you are good at?
It’s perfectly fine if you want your passion to be more of a hobby or something you do on the weekends, but it’s also valuable to examine if you’ll be able to make a sustainable living from it as well.
#5: Identify someone that’s doing something that you like or could see yourself doing
Is there someone out there that’s doing something you love? Follow their journey! You’ll be able to study their process and understand the steps they took to become successful in their field.
If we follow these soul-searching activities, I’m sure we’ll reach our passions in no time. What are you doing to reach your passion? I would love more ideas!
